Swamp Fest Providence Concert reviews
Rod is on his way to becoming Tony Bennett.
The stage/set design was all white, which worked well with the jazzy lighting. His arrangement of "Young Turks" left me disappointed, since this was one of his more rockin' songs and the new arrangement made it very distorted and mellower. An added "bonus" at this show was the performance of two songs by 22-year-old daughter Ruby Stewart, both covers (Son of a Preacher Man was one)...she looks like her model mother, but still nervous, and a high voice...she was OK. Rod attracts a mostly over-40 female audience that is reliving its younger years. The hot blonde saxophone player and hot brunette mandolin player were a nice addition, as well. The gospel/doo-wop/backup singers were great and a nice addition to the show. He did not play "If you think I'm Sexy" or "Passion", which were some of my personal favorites. While Rod played most of his famous hits, he also played some cover tunes from his upcoming album. The huge screen behind Rod made it easy to see everyone on the stage (and almost up skirts/dresses!) and included some nice animation for the intro (Rodminator), certain songs (First Cut is the Deepest), and the outro/exit (Mr. Stewart has left the building). I saw more stumbling drunk women at this show than at any holiday party...they let loose...not necessarily a pretty sight...and neither is Rod necessarily the "Hot Rod" he once was.
